Why Are Golf Balls So Expensive?

Despite being small, golf balls actually have a ton of engineering involved in the manufacturing process itself. The larger golf equipment companies spend millions during the development phase of the golf ball design and testing.

Golf balls are expensive due to the manufacturing process itself. Higher end golf balls use multiple layers of expensive material compared to less expensive golf balls. The R&D that these companies put in is in the millions and with that comes a cost hike to the customer.

Golf ball brand isn’t as important as the design behind the ball itself. Remember that when researching which golf ball you want to test out. I think it is best to grab a set of the top 3 to 5 golf ball sets and attempt to do a blind test of them. It might surprise you when you check the results.

I actually shot better with an older pack of Callaway recently but then again I have never had issues with most brands to be honest. You can also locate a ton of used golf balls online to save a ton of money especially if you are new to golf.

Are Expensive Golf Balls Better?

Just like most things, quality does matter. How could it not? I have looked into a few golf ball makers “process” and higher end balls are definitely made different compared to cheaper golf balls.

Expensive golf balls are hands down better than cheaply made golf balls. The amount of time, research and prototyping involved in the manufacturing is drastically different for high end golf balls compared to inexpensive balls. More expensive golf balls also use higher end materials and normally have multiple layers compared to generic ones.

A golf ball that is cheaply made can and will fly unevenly or randomly once hit. The “quality control” and “fit and finish” are also different between cheap vs expensive golf balls. I would suggest you get a used batch of balls from a quality golf ball brand versus buying a generic set of golf balls online.

How Much Should You Pay For Golf Balls?

It is best to start with a used set of balls from your local golf club or golf shop for new golfers. Most will want to buy a couple sets of brand new golf balls as well but I suggest starting cheap at first. By all means grab a set of dixons and compare them with cheaper balls (-;

If you are brand new to golf expect to pay $10 to $30 for a set of golf balls. For experienced golfers looking for a higher end golf ball, expect to pay $40 to $60 for a professional set of golf balls.

Another option is to go in on a couple sets with your golfing friends. If you buy golf balls in bulk online you can actually save a decent amount especially if you order 10+ sets of balls. You can buy golf balls in bulk online. You can also buy a ton of used golf balls in an assortment pack through ebay, amazon and a ton of other online retailers.

Locally you can find used balls at your driving ranges, golf course, pawn shops and golf shops in town. I think it would be a great idea to support your local golf stores IF possible and the prices make sense.

Which Golf Balls Cost The Most?

From my research so for here is the current list of the most expensive golf balls currently available. There will be price changes depending on where you buy the golf balls from. If you buy them locally, you might be able to get a discount. Right now though it is pretty difficult to beat online prices for golf balls.

  1. Dixon Golf Balls $59.95
  2. TaylorMade Distance+ Golf Balls $59.24
  3. Titleist TruFeel Golf Balls $59.13
  4. Titleist Pro V1x Golf Balls $53.99
  5. Maxfli Ufli Soft Golf Balls $53.43
  6. Titleist Pro V1 Golf Balls $50.99
  7. Callaway Chrome Soft Triple Track Golf Balls $49.99

There are also custom golf balls from specific years as well as custom logo golf balls that are priced anywhere from $100 to well over $1k for a set of golf balls. I saw some very expensive golf balls from the 70s going for insane prices but very cool to check out.

If you know of a set of golf balls that are better than this current list OR priced higher than these please let us know so we can keep this list up to date for everyone. Out of the list btw my favorites are the Distance Plus golf balls from TaylorMade and the Titleist V1’s.

Why Are Titleist Balls So Expensive?

Titleist golf balls are priced on the higher end when it comes to golf ball prices. Right now there are a few brands that can keep up with the titleist quality. I do not consider these golf balls expensive because they are priced within $5 to $10 of other golf ball brands.

The Titleist balls are expensive due to the years of research and development that they put into their golf ball technology. They also use more expensive materials and use more layers compared to cheaper golf ball makers.

I would not use these at the driving range ( now that would be considered expensive golf balls ) but any set in the $40 – $60 range is more than doable for the average golfer. As long as you aren’t constantly hitting your ball into the drink, you should be ok tossing a couple 20s down for a decent set of balls.

I mean, it is titleist… this brand rocks! These are also some of the only golf balls that you can easily resell locally or online and get the majority of your money back. They hold their value especially if you keep them in the box.

What Is The Rarest Golf Ball?

The word rare can mean different things to different people. For me rare usually comes with a treasure hunt. The gutta percha golf balls dating back to the late 1800s bring that treasure hunt to life. Many divers have tried to locate these very rare golf balls and still have yet to be found.

The rarest golf ball is the gutta percha golf balls. The balls once belonged to the golf legend Tom Morris. Tom Morris actually won the US Open a total of 4 times back in the 1860s. An estimated 20 of Toms gutta percha golf balls have been resting on the bottom of the donegal lake for over 120 years.

One of the main issues is that it ended up becoming a tradition for golfers to go to the lake and hit a few golf balls into the lake. Having MORE golf balls all over the bottom of the lake has made locating these rare golf balls harder than looking for a needle in a haystack.

Where To Buy Expensive Golf Balls Online?

I added this part simply because I noticed a ton of very expensive golf balls listed on eBay. There are some really old balls for sale ( or auction ) for those interested in the rare, vintage and harder to find golf merch.

Ebay is a great place online to get rare and expensive golf balls. For those who collect golf balls, finding these rare balls is harder compared to online auctions and golf shops.

I would like to know how they are able to verify the age but I do know there are certain characteristics to check on the exterior as well as weighing the balls to help prove that it is indeed a vintage or rare ball. While I am still new to collecting golf balls, it is a pretty fun hobby to get into for those who like to collect golf memorabilia.
